HALFWAY through the chocolatey drink I decided that the iconic birthday cake should probably have stayed just that…a cake.
M&S’s mascot Colin the Caterpillar has been turned into an iced drink at more than 300 cafés across the country. It has previously been made into a cake jar, chocolate face pieces and merchandise.
The drink, which cost £3.50, is made up of blended chocolate milk and chocolate flavoured whipped cream, topped with chocolate pieces and a Colin the Caterpillar chocolate face.

I was keen to try the new beverage after it took social media by storm with fans also eager to try out M&S’s new creation.
My first shock was the calories for this drink which were displayed publicly on the big menu board at the café in Didcot – 490 – as legally required by the Government from April this year.
I still excitedly ordered my frappé and watched as the staff member prepared the chocolatey beverage.
I was a bit disappointed with the presentation as it didn’t look as spectacular as the photos put out by the store but the drink still looked nice with the Colin face sticking out of the whipped cream.
Fearful the chocolate face would sink to the bottom I ate that first and being a fan of the popular cake, the familiar Colin the Caterpillar taste did not disappoint.

I wish I could have said this of the drink but the iced beverage didn’t resemble the taste of the cake at all.
It was tasty but the flavour was pretty much a thick chocolate milkshake that could have been replicated anywhere.
The chocolate flavoured whipped cream was by far the best part which could have been compared to chocolate filling in a Colin cake if I was stretching.
The drink itself was fine at first but about halfway through the drink I wondered if I could finish it as it started to taste a bit sickly.
I decided instead to try and drink up the chocolate pieces but they were too big to suck through the straw.

Instead I ended up poking the bottom of the glass with the straw to trap to the chocolate pieces and eat them that way – which I can imagine wasn’t a very gracious look from other customer’s perspectives.
Abandoning the drink before I finished, I left the café feeling disappointed. For £1 less I could have bought five mini-Colin the Caterpillar cakes instead which would have been a lot tastier.
Using the famous words of Simon Cowell, it is a no from me.
