TAKEAWAY

Call me Old Mother Hubbard, but driving home one night, late, starving and knowing there was no food in the cupboard, I got as far as Woodstock, screeched to a halt and parked outside the Wok Inn.

Peering through its Georgian windows I had no idea whether the food was any good or not, but needs must, and I was far too hungry to start researching it. Instead I rang Mr Greedy, took his order and strode in.

I admit I haven’t been to a Chinese takeaway for a very long time, preferring a really good curry or something more exotically spiced – Thai, Mayalsian that sort of thing.

But tonight I threw caution to the wind and ordered a chow mein with glass noodles (an optional 90p extra) for us both in various flavours and hauled them home with a bag of rice crackers.

Each dish came in at just over a fiver, but we once we’d unpacked our takeaway, we realised the portions were so enormous we could easily have shared one. Indeed, once we’d put as much as we could manage on our plates, the plastic cartoons looked untouched.

As for the taste, the flavour and texture was pretty good, with none of that slimy, monosodium glutamate of yester year that nearly put me off Chinese food for life. The veggie chow mein needed more veg, a lot more, but the stir fried sauce with noodles was fiery and tasty. The Singapore chow mein, which included prawn and chicken was milder.

When the teenagers came home later that night they were delighted to find what was essentially two portions still left on the kitchen table, and tucked in happily. So in terms of value for money we fed a hungry family of four for under £12. Job done.
