A vintage clothing store on a major city route has closed after serving customers for the past 17 years.

Reign is no longer open to customers on Cowley Road and is listed as 'permanently closed' on Google.

The business has another store in Soho, London, and a shop in Stoke Newington.

It is the latest well-known trader in the area to close its doors.

Earlier this year it emerged that Atomic Burger, which opened in 2009, had shut.

The Temple Lounge restaurant off Cowley Road also closed, before it was announced that it would reopen as a new business called Mint Lounge.

The owner of Temple Lounge, Naz Choudhury, blamed the installation of bollards to create Low Traffic Neighbourhoods for the closure.

He said in January: "The council's decision to put these bollards up along Cowley Road was the main reason (for the closure), people don't want to travel here any more."

So far there is nothing to suggest that Reign closed as a result of the LTNs.

Following its closure in February, a notice on the door told customers: "After 17 years and much thought, we have decided that the time has come to close our doors and focus on pastures new.

"All is not lost. We look forward to welcoming you in our London stores in Soho, and newly opened 2,800 sq ft store in Stoke Newington.

"We also have an online store reignvintage.com with over 1,000 items available to buy online, and this will be developed further through the year."

The notice added: "It has been such a pleasure welcoming you to our Oxford shop over the years and getting to know so many of you.

"Thank you so much for your custom and your loyalty - we will certainly be leaving with many happy memories."

A staff member at Reign in London said it was possible the landlord of the shop in Cowley Road had sold the building.

Restaurateur Clinton Pugh, who runs Cafe Coco on Cowley Road, and Kazbar and Cafe Tarifa, has said LTNs are damaging trade in the area and in February put up a banner criticising the traffic measures.

Oxford Mail:

He said at the time: "The council have literally strangled the life out of the Cowley Road and it is having a very negative effect on businesses."

Earlier this month, campaign group Oxfordshire Liveable Streets said 23 new businesses had opened on the Cowley Road since the introduction of the East Oxford Low Traffic Neighbourhood (LTN) in 2021.

The group, which supports the scheme aiming to reduce congestion and pollution, said in 2022, the first full year of the LTN being in place, the number of new businesses opening rose by 56 per cent compared to the previous year.

The findings were in contrast to a business impact survey carried out by Cowley Road Traders in February which found eight shops have closed where LTNs are located, with more just 'hanging on'.
