Prezzo in Oxford is one of 46 restaurants set to close across the country as the company struggles with soaring energy and food costs.

The branch in Didcot will also shut.

The restaurant is located at Oxford Castle in the city centre.

The news comes after the Italian pizza chain fell into administration in 2020 and was bought by private equity owners Cain International.

Two years ago, Prezzo shut 22 restaurants and cut 216 jobs.

The next 46 closures will put 816 workers at risk of redundancy.

Prezzo has blamed the cost of living crisis for the cuts, saying that its utility bills have more than doubled and they have been hit by rising food prices.

The price of pizza sauce has risen by 28 per cent and the price of spaghetti by 40 per cent.

The cost of dough balls have also increased by 15 per cent.

Dean Challenger, chief executive of Prezzo, told Sky News: "The last three years have been some of the hardest times I have ever seen for the high street and I'm extremely proud of the way our colleagues have retained Prezzo's position as an appealing, trusted, great value food and drink experience."

He added that the changing face of the high street and soaring inflation "has made it impossible to keep all restaurants operating profitably".
