STONE the crows! I never thought the day would come that someone would put me in the position of defending the EU but R. Lee (Oxford Mail, October 30) has done that.

He is incorrect to say the Government has no alternative in Government contracts due to EU law. They have the option whether to accept the lowest bid or not.

He also says there is hardly a queue of EU members wanting to leave the union. I’ll bet the Greeks rue the day they joined the EU. He asserts that it would be economic suicide for the UK to leave the EU. He should remember there was life before the UK joined the EU.

Lastly he says energy costs more because of the pound’s weakness against the Euro, despite the fact that oil prices are in dollars.

Having a weak currency is a two-edge sword: imports are dearer but exports are more competitive, giving our exports the edge in world markets over the Euro.

I think it’s time Mr R. Lee packed his bags and went to his EU paradise!
