MIGHT Ralph Leavis (Letters, August 31) perhaps just try to understand that writing “long-winded letters about real or alleged cruelty to animals” does not negate the possibility of the writers feeling genuine sympathy or even giving help to any living creature, including humans?

Given the power that they wield, humans undoubtedly are, on the whole, the most selfish, cruel, greedy and unlovely entities on planet earth — but we don’t have to be that way, we can try to right some of the wrongs. Is that too alien a concept for Mr Leavis to understand?
