Blame litter bugs

10:00am Thursday 29th July 2010

REGARDING the letter from Colin Smith, formerly of the city’s cleansing department, complaining about the toilets, gum and cigarette ends in our streets (Oxford Mail, July 22), I would like to say that I have also noticed this.

I catch buses almost every day, and see that while Oxford City Council, using council taxpayers’ money, has installed new large bins at bus stops, almost every person with a cigarette throws their end onto the ground near the bins.

I have seen council workers picking up these cigarette ends, only for the pavements to be covered again the next day by irresponsible people.

People walk past me at bus stops spitting on to the pavements.

Others stick their used chewing gum on the back of bus seats.

Toilet habits are also falling.

I have seen, and spoken to, city council workers trying to keep our streets clean from people’s disgusting behaviour. They work hard.

Mr Smith needs to understand it is people’s own behaviour causing this situations and hitting our pockets.

Criticise the correct people, not those who do their best to keep our streets clean.
