This is a letter sent in to the Oxford Mail which was published in print this week.

School traffic is a major cause of congestion within Oxford and can pose a risk to pedestrians and cyclists.

The concentration of private schools in my Summertown ward contributes significantly to this issue as often catchment to these schools is wider than state schools.

Partnership working with and between private schools is part of the solution.

This includes partnerships to promote school shuttle buses from park and ride sites and to roll out school streets (a timed road closure near school gates that restricts access for vehicles during school drop-off and pick up times to create a safer environment).

This will not only ease congestion at peak times, but also remove the risks from coaches and parents’ vehicles to all people in and around the school gates, and using national cycle routes.

In turn, these measures will help support the ambition of Vision Zero to eliminate deaths and serious injuries from road traffic collisions in Oxfordshire.
