THE destruction wrought on the recently opened Blackbird Ley’s Memorial Garden will have surprised very few (Oxford Mail, April 5).
The casual destruction and vandalism of public facilities is an accepted part of English life.
We have to accept that the English people have a propensity for public vandalism.
The Oxford Mail has reported on the destruction of defibrillators at community centres; the destruction of the imaginative cravings in Bury Knowle Park in Headington; last week’s casual destruction to a children’s playground bus; the everyday destruction of tree saplings.
With so many people in our society with such destructive attitude towards public facilities, we should not be shocked when employers report that of 50 job applications, only one are from people born in this country.
Our society needs to address the minority of English people who believe it is their right to wantonly destroy public furnishings and public facilities.
