WE ARE writing as GPs working in the city of Oxford. We come from a variety of political backgrounds but we share a desire to see the NHS thrive.

We all believe passionately that the only sensible outcome on Thursday is a Remain vote.

The evidence put forward by the overwhelming majority of experts shows that leaving the European Union would cause incalculable damage.

We are deeply saddened by the divisive, misleading and evidence-free propaganda of the Leave campaign.

We feel that this is calculated to stir up distrust of immigrant communities, as well as painting a deeply overoptimistic picture of how this country would survive outside the EU.

We do not believe there is any truth in the assertion that leaving the EU would free up any sum, let alone the stated £350 million per week, to be spent on the NHS.

The effect is far more likely to be the reverse.

The NHS can only be funded if there is a healthy economy.

The NHS thrives on a spirit of international collaboration and movement of labour, and could not manage without the 10 per cent of its medical staff who come from other EU countries.

We value the ability of UK citizens to live, work, train and obtain health care without difficulty elsewhere in the EU.

We value the ability to work with our EU partners in matters of trade, security, research and education.

We believe that after an exit from the EU the task of trying to restore the benefits which this country currently enjoys as of right would be overwhelming, and would distract from the many other important things which need to be done.

Leaving would create an increase, not a reduction, in red tape.

We urge all voters to bear in mind the incalculable benefits resulting from EU membership before making a decision. Once out, there is no going back.
