IT WAS sad for me to read the article about the “end of an era” with the closure of the former Pressed Steel bowling green.
From recollection, my late father Harold Hull was responsible for its setting up in 1953, having previously been doing the same job at the Osberton Radiators Bowls Club in North Oxford.
He looked after it with loving care and attention until he retired from Pressed Steel in 1961.
Even then, however, he moved on to look after the greens at South Oxford Bowls Cclub.
Of particular mention was an article published in the Press Express about Harold having some turf from his green on display at the Chelsea Flower Show.
I doubt if there are many around who would recall having played there during that era. I am sure, however, that they will also shed a tear at its loss.
