A new Chiltern Railways passenger train service along the Cowley branch line (November 6) is excellent news for Littlemore residents. By the end of the decade we could have two trains an hour taking just five or 10 minutes to get in and out of Oxford.

For many older Littlemore residents it will be back to the future. They can remember catching steam trains from the old station off Sandford Road for a day out shopping in Oxford.

This time there will be two new stations.

The Science Park stop (next to the Minchery Road allotments) will serve Littlemore and the Kassam Stadium.

Another station at Watlington Road by the car factory will serve the Cowley Business Park.

The new local trains would continue on to Bicester and London Marylebone. This is not more far-fetched nonsense like tunnels under Cormarket, costly tram systems or road pricing. This is a practical, affordable proposal by a reputable train operator to reduce traffic jams and speed journeys. It would use rail lines that are already in use by BMW for freight.

We plan to be first in the queue for tickets when the new service opens.
