Can someone please explain why I see notices displayed around the city saying ‘Police operation in progress’.

It is reassuring that our hard- pressed and well-respected “bobbies” are active in an area. But surely this informs the would-be criminals to be careful, suspend their devious plans or wait until the notices are taken down and then resume their criminal activities?

Is it not sensible not to let criminals know that the police are operating in the area? Could it be that it is against “human rights” not to tell them the police are watching?

This reminds me of the early days of warfare where the start time of battles were agreed by the opposing sides usually preceded by a joint feast.
