RUGBY UNION: Knights' late blitz sinks Henley
8:00am Tuesday 11th February 2014 in Rugby
HENLEY Hawks were undone by leaders Doncaster Knights’ late surge, which consigned them to a 36-10 defeat at Castle Park.
Hawks trailed just 17-10 after 64 minutes, but slipped to a heavy loss that leaves them just two points and one place above the drop zone.
Henley had the wind behind them in the first half and centre Danny Wells kicked them ahead with an early penalty.
Fly half Tom Allen and wing Xavier Andre went close for the visitors, but tighthead prop Ross Davies crashed over for Doncaster’s opening try, converted by wing Doug Flockhart.
Hawks full back Ed Yarnton collected a bouncing ball and turned to sprint between the posts for Wells to convert.
Henley led 10-7 at the break, but had lockJosh McNally sin-binned for pulling down a maul.
Wing Lewis Tyson went over for Knights, despite some desperate cover tackling.
Hawks’ cause was not helped when replacement prop Sam Steventon suffered a hamstring injury just eight minutes after coming on.
Doncaster centre David Clark scored a brace of tries on 52 and 64 minutes, the first via an interception, with Flockhart converting the second for 24-10.
Henley lost scrum half Luke Carter to injury before conceding two late tries.
Full back Glen Bryce and Flockhart were the scorers, with the later converting his own try.
