Derby day hero James Constable has pledged his future to Oxford United – with the club’s all-time goalscoring record at the back of his mind.

The striker, whose two goals gave the U’s their first victory at Swindon’s County Ground for 38 years on Sunday has been the subject of intense speculation over his future.

Luton boss Gary Brabin confirmed that they had a bid rejected for the 26-year-old, but says that he is still interested in bringing Constable to Kenilworth Road.

In the build-up to Sunday’s clash, Swindon boss Paolo Di Canio also stated that he would be interested in the striker.

But Constable, who signed an improved long-term contract towards the end of last season, says he is happy at Oxford, and doesn’t want to go.

He showed his passion towards the United supporters by racing the length of the pitch to celebrate his opening goal at Swindon, and kissed the Oxford badge.

“It has never crossed my mind (to leave),” he said. “I have just under three years left on my contract and I want to stay here.

“I will be here for as long as Oxford will have me.”

Constable becomes the first United player to score twice at Swindon, but was a little upset he didn’t cap the day with a hat-trick, seeing his effort saved in the last minute when through on goal.

“I was really disappointed with that one,” he said.

“I opened myself up too much and let the keeper read it.”

However, the double means that Constable has moved to 71 career goals for United, keeping him eighth in the club’s all-time goalscoring record list – and now just six strikes off the top five.

When signing his new deal in April, the striker admitted he was targeting the all-time record, held by Graham Atkinson with 107, and says it is still in his thoughts.

“It’s in the back of my mind, so I just need to chip away and hopefully get there as soon as I can,” he said.
