GEORGE Baldock says Oxford United’s best chance of success this season will come if the club can keep the existing squad together this month.

The side’s excellent form this season has brought speculation linking several players with a move away in the January transfer window.

United have been clear they have no interest in jeopardising their Sky Bet League Two promotion chances by selling key players.

It is a stance Baldock backs.

He said: “I think if the club wants to be successful it’s imperative the lads stay together.

“It’s not just the ability on the field, it’s the bond we have off it.

“One or two going could perhaps upset the group, but that’s not for me to decide at all.

“The future of quite a few of us is out of our hands.

“I’m sure the chairman will be delighted to see the end of the transfer window.”

The right back’s own future is not set in stone.

Baldock is on a season-long loan from MK Dons, but there is a concern his form has been so good it could lead to a recall.

He said: “It’s nice to get a few plaudits and you want clubs like MK to be talking about you again, but I really do not know what’s going to happen.

“Whatever happens, I’m fully focused on Oxford United at the minute.”

The 22-year-old is in no rush to leave, with the last few weeks the most enjoyable of his career.

He was already one of the side’s stand-out performers, but has found another gear in recent games.

Supporters have taken note, with Baldock winning the last three man-of-the-match polls on the Oxford Mail website.

“I feel like I’ve been doing OK,”

he said, in what must be the understatement of the season.

“I haven’t been enjoying football like this at any time during my career.

“It’s nice to be here and feel appreciated.

“In the last five games I’ve been really happy with my performances.

“I think I’ve performed well with Macca (Alex MacDonald).

“We complement each other and he picks out my runs, so he’s easy to play with.”
