Patrick Hoban scored twice as Oxford United eased past Thame United 4-0 in a pre-season friendly at the ASM Stadium.

The Irish striker sandwiched a spectacular strike from Callum O'Dowda, before Sam Humphreys added a fourth late on.

With boss Michael Appleton away scouting Luton Town's game with Brentford - both of whom United face next month - assistants Derek Fazackerley and Chris Allen named a side which included Chey Dunkley, Michael Collins and Hoban.

On a decent surface United were quick to assert themselves and O'Dowda forced goalkeeper Lee Farrow into smart saves.

The second effort earned United a corner, from which Josh Ruffels picked out Hoban to head into the net on 25 minutes.

Thame almost found an immediate equaliser when Max Crocombe spilled Luke Ricketts shot in the drizzle and Dan West prodded the rebound wide.

O'Dowda restored United's authority with a superb goal just before the half-hour mark, when the winger turned sharply in the box and blasted a shot into the top corner.

The third goal arrived nine minutes into the second half. Ruffels slid in James Roberts, who drew the goalkeeper before unselfishly squaring to give Hoban a tap-in.

The visitors turned to their bench on the hour.

Indian forward Udanta Singh and a French triallist came on, but one of the other new faces completed the scoring 14 minutes from time.

Humphreys found himself in space 20 yards out and curled left-footed into the corner of the net to wrap up a convincing victory.
