Fleetwood Tn 1 (Schumacher 12) Oxford Utd 1 (Kitson 89)

Oxford Mail: Fleetwood Tn 1 (Schumacher 12) Oxford Utd 1 (Kitson 89) Fleetwood Tn 1 (Schumacher 12) Oxford Utd 1 (Kitson 89)

DAVE Kitson headed a late equaliser to keep Oxford United top of the League Two table and preserve their unbeaten away record.

It was the least the visitors deserved after battering the home side for almost the whole of the second half.

Fleetwood opened the scoring through Steven Schumacher's 12th-minute free-kick, but were unable to build on the lead.

United were well in the game before half time and were utterly in charge after the restart.

They forced a host of openings, but their chance of taking something from the game appeared to vanish when Danny Rose had a penalty saved against his former side ten minutes from time.

But Kitson ensured the battling performance would be rewarded by glancing a header into the far corner in front of an ecstatic away end.

As expected, U's manager Chris Wilder named the same XI and substitutes from Tuesday's goalless draw with Newport County.

A clever pass from Kitson got James Constable in behind the Fleetwood defence inside two minutes, but the striker's cross was cleared under pressure.

Nathan Tyson led the line for Fleetwood and the loan signing from Blackpool quickly served notice of his ability on the break. Running on to a long ball, his cross was just behind Gareth Evans, allowing United to regroup.

A similar move led to the opening goal on 12 minutes. Tyson chased down a through ball and drew a foul from Johnny Mullins down the left side of the penalty area.

Fleetwood packed the box looking for a header, but Schumacher had other ideas and curled a shot over Ryan Clarke and into the far corner.

United had folded after going behind on their previous visit to Highbury in January, but the league leaders showed their resolve by having more of the ball up to half time.

They kept possession well and probed for openings, although a well organised Fleetwood were tough to break down.

Stewart Murdoch played just in front of the back four in an effort to cut off the supply line to Dave Kitson, while James Constable was well shackled.

Josh Ruffels got the away fans going with a mazy run on 17 minutes which ended with a blocked shot.

The 20-year-old laid on a decent chance shortly afterwards, beating his man and crossing for Ryan Williams, who was unable to make a clean connection on his header.

It began a spell where Fleetwood were forced to defend in numbers and Mullins had a sweet volley well blocked at a corner.

The home side were direct when they had the ball and looked dangerous when they broke forward.

One incisive move on 32 minutes saw Schumacher presented with a glorious chance to double his tally for the afternoon, but the midfielder blazed Gareth Evans's cross off target.

It was a rare clear opening, though, and despite trailing United headed into the interval with plenty of reason to be optimistic.

After Clarke had parried a shot from Evans early in the second half, United went on to enjoy their best spell of the game.

For 15 minutes they pinned Fleetwood back, much to the concern of the home fans.

The Cod Army defence was stretched by one attack which saw Constable, Ryan Williams and Kitson all have efforts saved, before Hunt blazed wide.

Asa Hall rippled the net with one left-footed shot, but it passed just the wrong side of the post.

Just before the hour United's players had their heads in their hands as Constable mis-kicked from close range after Raynes won a flick-on at a corner.

Tyson had a header saved and United's flow was briefly disrupted by a stoppage to treat Mullins, before they poured forward again.

With 15 minutes left Kitson was denied by a superb one-handed save from Davies to keep out the striker's firm header.

The pressure told five minutes later, when Kitson was brought down in the area.

Rose stepped up, but Davies guessed correctly and dived to his left to parry.

The setback did nothing to slow United's momentum and they continued to pile forward.

Time began to slip away, but in the 89th minute the breakthrough finally arrived.

Hunt crossed from the right and Kitson rose highest to glance the ball into the net.

United pushed for a winner, but Fleetwood hung on for a point.

What I'm massively pleased about is the reaction after half-time. Last season we used to be unable to come back from a goal down. We not only came back but should have really won the game. It shows the characters that are in the team now. At a time we have significant players out injured I'm very encouraged with the results. Only team in England unbeaten away from home! I think Wilder and co. need credit for digging in during an injury crisis. Anyone who thinks it should be easy to be where we are in this strange league needs their head examining. P.S please stop saying top 3 all that matters Oldun. It's a little annoying to keep reading the same comment! Just my opinion!

Please take the easier option of not reading it.

If you want to shut me up on that one (which I will maintain to be true - as the playoffs ARE a lottery) your best line is to ignore me.

Top 3 is all that matters.

If anyone read as far as that they deserve no sympathy

Great result just got back after decided to stay the night and celebrate in Blackpool. Yes shame about penalty miss but credit to the team and management for keeping going instead of letting heads drop. As for talk about CW going to Portsmouth well yes I think he will stay which is not a bad thing I think he has a good relationship with IL while at Portsmouth he won't get the same support. Maybe on the club side we are not so big as them but playing side we are better (see league table).
As for Oldun I agree top three is all that matters.

COYY make this the season for glory and promotion

Great result yesterday shame about the penalty miss but thankfully the team did not drop their heads and kept going for the full 90. Just got back after staying over in Blackpool to celebrate and saw that CW is reported to be interesting Portsmouth. OK if he goes he goes but I think he will see out this season at least which will hopefully result in promotion. Ok Portsmouth are a bigger club than us but look at the league table and who is better off. CW has a good relationship with IL would he have the same at Portsmouth? I doubt it. But realistically while I would like CW to stay football managers are like busses when one goes there is always another coming along. As for Oldun yes you are correct top three is all that matters at the end of the season (lets hope we don't go into out usual free fall in the New Year).
A cup run would be nice not only for the club but the money side but give me wins in the league anytime.

Oldun, I agree that your repetitive posts are boring.

It's up to you what you post of course, but maybe you could enjoy some interesting debate if you would post something more considered and insightful.

Do you go to the games? What do you think of the standard of reffing this season? Are you a 442 man or do you think our players are capable of playing something more flexible? Would you play Williams AND Potter (when fit)? Has Kitson won you round yet?

Yes we all know that promotion is the ultimate aim, we learnt that at age 8. In the meantime there is an entire season to enjoy.

I certainly do enjoy that interesting debate - generally better on rage online isn't it?

I also enjoy the 'abuse'

I can comment only on our how I feel that players have fared in most of our home matches

It seems that Kitson must have been far, far better in most away matches. Very skilful at this low level - as I expected him to be

Constable (in home matches) has not played like a £175 k player (has he?)

In home matches this season, I feel that Potter has not been as good as I had hoped. I favour Williams - on Potter's this season's home form

Pathetic attendances (where, as with other clubs, absent season ticket holders are included) I find it very hard to get to most way fixtures but have seen more of our home fixtures than have too many of our far too many stay away fans (pathetic average gates for a top of the table United - aren't they?) , We should be averaging 7500 to 8000

Repetitive (yes) -again , for me , fourth and losing the play off final at Wembley would mean a very very poor return for United - as I feel that this is such a mediocre division.

It is high time we pulled well away from 4th (I believe that we will make the top 3)

'Life's' been very kind to me. May it be so for all of you

I await a misquote or two of this from one fan - don't you?

Fair enough Oldun. I did read as far as that so I've only got myself to blame!
Would be intrigued to know what you'd be expecting in the first 2-3 seasons if we go up to League 2? Consolidation? Playoffs/promotion??

My view is that as long as we leave a strong focus on developing youth, excellent training facilities/staff and smart player recruitment we'll always get sustainable progression through the leagues. I think Lenegan is good for us in that respect.
