BENJI Buchel looks set to turn down an international call-up in favour of being available for Oxford United’s Easter fixtures.

The goalkeeper has become head coach Michael Appleton’s No 1 choice, but it looked like he would be one of five players unavailable next weekend.

Last week the 26-year-old hinted he would consider backing out of a training camp in Spain with the Liechtenstein squad, which includes friendly matches against Gibraltar and the Faroe Islands.

Appleton has been grateful to Buchel’s national association for their co-operation, which now appears to pave the way for him to stay with United.

It means he will be able to play when Stevenage visit on Good Friday, along with Easter Monday’s trip to Cambridge United.

If all goes well it would put Buchel in pole position to start the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy final at Wembley the following weekend.

Appleton said: “The Liechtenstein FA were very good and they understand the situation that for the time being he’s the No 1.

“I think that benefits them and Benji.

“They know there’s a cup final around the corner and we have two very important games in four days.

“I think they’ve left the decision to Benji and he’s already said he’s desperate to play in the two games to give himself a chance to play in the final.”
