AN out-of-sorts Oxford United were stung by a late strike from Adam Mekki as the points were shared with Aldershot Town.
It extended United's unbeaten run to five games, but the home side will view it as two points dropped after leading for more than 50 minutes.
Adam Chapman had put the U's in front with a well-taken strike just after the half hour mark.
But United, who were subdued throughout, were unable to find a second goal, which would have secured victory.
It gave Aldershot a chance and they took it with a fantastic finish from Mekki six minutes from time.
Simon Heslop received a straight red card in the 90th minute to compound a frustrating afternoon.
James Constable, Peter Leven and Tony Capaldi all returned to the side after being rested in midweek.
Jake Forster-Caskey and Lee Cox dropped to the bench, while top scorer Tom Craddock's return to fitness meant there was no room among the substitutes for Tyrone Marsh.
Before the game the Kassam Stadium paid tribute to former U's player Mitchell Cole, who died last week, with a minute's applause.
Whether it had an impact on the players or not, the game began in a subdued manner.
United looked disjointed for much of the game and struggled to keep the ball.
But on the occasions they were able to string some passes together, Aldershot's defence looked vulnerable.
Alfie Potter had a great chance in the eighth minute, when James Constable's cross fell to him at the back post. The winger looked set to volley the looping ball into the net from eight yards, but ended up skewing it well wide.
If anything, Aldershot looked more composed in possession.
They looked dangerous on the break and one counter-attack saw Ryan Clarke only able to parry Kieron Cadogan's cross, which fell just out of Peter Vincenti's reach.
Sole striker Dani Lopez was a handful and only one excellent block from Damian Batt prevented him from a clear sight of goal midway through the half.
The officials did not help with the game's fluency, awarding a host of cheap free-kicks.
There was one bizarre passage of play where Danny Hylton looked five yards offside but was allowed to play on. Jake Wright caught up and ended up barging him over in the box, but referee Tony Harrington awarded a corner.
United's supporters did their best to inspire the home side and produced another burst of applause in the 17th minute - to make Cole's squad number at the club.
As the half wore on United gradually began to click.
One precise through ball from Chapman put in Constable, but at full stretch he lobbed Shots goalkeeper Jamie Young before watching in agony as it dropped wide.
On 33 minutes United made the breakthrough.
A cross from Liam Davis was kept alive by Potter and Constable did well to tee up Chapman, who netted his first goal of the season with a low 20-yard shot with his left foot.
It should have been 2-0 with the next attack, but Rigg mis-kicked from Constable's cross.
The interval did little to improve the overall quality of the game.
Hylton had two efforts in quick succession, heading Cadogan's free-kick wide and having another shot blocked by Batt.
United were a threat on the break, but two promising attacks were let down by poor decisions from Potter.
The winger was substituted shortly afterwards, along with Davis, as Craddock and Heslop came on.
The fresh legs were unable to stir the U's, who would have killed the game with a second goal.
Instead, Aldershot looked the more likely to score, forcing a number of dangerous set pieces.
United did just enough to preserve their lead, until a moment of class from Mekki.
The substitute cut in from the left flank and from the corner of the area curled a shot into the top corner.
United's chances of finding a late winner disappeared in the 90th minute, when Heslop was sent off for a rash tackle in Mekki.

Leven and Potter were hopeless...and to be honest the ref was one of the worst I have seen in charge of our games for ages...

Basically no hope whatsoever.
At this rate I shall not be renewing my season ticket and will pick and choose what games I want to see.

Beachump Mummy - why don't you eff off back to your hole in Swindon? Your team needs you in times of trouble and your manager is about to walk.

Interesting, do you know something we don't. Personally I think he may be asked to leave, especially if his signings don't find the onion bag on a more regular basis. We are now 3 points off the playoff spot, not a major but hey our expectations are quite high now.

1. How many times in this entire calendar year (never mind this season) has CW been able to field anything like his best side?
2. As importantly – and maybe even more so – how often has he been able to field anything like a settled one?
3. How many fully fit players has he got to pick from on Wednesday?
Answers:
1. Never.
2. To any meaningful extent, never.
3. He’ll be hard pressed to field a fully fit eleven of any kind, let alone one that makes tactical sense.
Anyone who thinks this is (a) a typical problem faced by all clubs or (b) an “excuse”, is in need of a serious reality check. I for one am sticking right behind him and the team – they’re showing amazing resilience in exceptional circumstances. Come on you yellows.

A settled side is only any good (and worth remaining settled) if it doing well . There are many many many out there looking for work who would not do as badly as Wider has without his missing' superstars' . COYY
I’m as disappointed as anyone by results and league position (and yesterday’s flat, weary performance), but before anyone starts calling again for CW’s head, just three questions:

When you are playing a team as poor as Aldershot at home do you really have to play with two left backs ? So we get a goal and then try to defend it. Pass the initiative back to them and concede. Can't remember that happening before.
I think Wilder may now try to save his skin via the JPT. Ludicrous as it seems it would be difficult to sack a manager that gets you to Wembley even of we finish 18th.
Of greater concern is the complete silence of the chairman. Is he interested ?
We need a buffer of ten points from the bottom two. Lenegan throwing in the towel means administration and a nasty way of going down.
Happy days !

Excuses excuses excuses, are you the managers apologist?
GOOD managers find a way to WIN despite adversity, GOOD managers get their team playing decent FOOTBALL, the manager of OUFC does neither.. He's NO good!
Forget the excuses for the players absolute DIRE 'performance' likewise, it was obviously easier to sloth around the pitch like lumbering idiots using the tragic loss of a former player as the EXCUSE!! Wouldn't it have been much more of a Tribute to that player if they went out and gave their ALL in stead? Too much like hard work? It was a disgraceful and shocking performance by management and players alike, NO excuses. They don't deserve support, and many are drifting away- who can blame them? I donot.

Wilder try's hard, but, pun intended, is way out of his league. Oxford are a team of non league tryers - I don't think he's got the contacts to build a decent team, we have no creative midfielders, no natural goalscorer, constable couldn't hit a barn door with a banjo - if he fell in a barrel of boobs he'd come out sucking his thumb!. Look at teams with half the budgets - burton and Cheltenham spring to mind, far better, recognised goal scorers than we've got - why is that? Frontline for Cheltenham is Zebroski and Harrad on gates of 2500!! What the hell is going on? Apparently Gillingham got battered at Rotherham yesterday but won the game - might be past his best but still capable of scoring in div 2, deon burton got both. Oxford need to get their act together and fast as all the teams below are improving. Wilder out now or he'll be sacked in may with oxford relegated.

Why is the board silent?
What is the game plan with Oxf Utd?
Where is the investment going to come from (if there is to be any investment to build for the future)?
I know everyone is calling for CW’s head, but I believe he is trying his absolute hardest with no support or interest coming from above him and sections of fans rubbishing him. I will continue to support him 100% because he could just as easily walk away from this and take a qualified coaching role elsewhere earning much more ££’s as well.
We all love our club and have different views which is a good thing, but simply replacing CW is not the answer there are far bigger questions that need addressing with regards to the future of Oxf Utd.

The excuses used yesterday were of a manager who has run out of ideas. Out of his depth as a football league manager and if you are not sure just look at last seasons loan signings and what the final result was at the end of the season. What really bothers me is the total silence of the man who is the Chairman and owner of the club. Without question last season the money was made available for those loan signings with Wilder's words saying that once he had a fully fit squad we would see a difference but when the manager makes so many bad decisions such as going 4 3 3 at Plymouth playing young Marsh in the manner that he did would you have confidence in him. Yesterdays game the performance was poor not one player stood out.All Wilders signings. Yes there has been bad news but this is a results game and the show has to go on. I am sure there are a few of us who go to the Kassam would say that 2012 in way or the other has been a bad year but you don't hear them moan about it. They get on with life and what they have to do,Wilder take note if you think you are hard done by there are those a lot worse off than you. Mr. Lenegan appears to have lost omplete interest and I feel we should all be greatly concerned as to what the future holds.

At the end of the season , we can still get up to play the many giant clubs of the third division - without the lottery of the play offs
If we take 55 fro the last 25 then we will match Wycombe's third place total of 2010-11 (80 points)
It just needs say 16 wins 2 defeats and 7 draws
or 17 wins 4 defeats and 4 draws
Come on you yellows
