Whing urges Oxford United to ignite season

ANDY Whing is desperate for a victory tomorrow to kick-start Oxford United’s season.

Chris Wilder’s men have gone four games without a win and will need to be at their best to take all three points at home to a buoyant Northampton Town.

Whing, who scored his first goal for the club in Tuesday’s 2-2 draw at Barnet, knows the U’s need to begin climbing the npower League Two table sooner rather than later.

“They’re all big games at the minute with the position we’re in and we want to pretty much start our season, really,” he said.

“We’re looking for a big result.”

United’s squad held a meeting before the trip to Underhill in midweek to discuss the situation and they had a long talk at training yesterday.

Whing stressed the squad are examining everything they can do to rediscover the winning habit.

He said: “It’s all everyone here talks about, how can we do better?

“There’s a lot of soul searching individually as well as in our units. “We were standing outside for a good 40 minutes talking to the gaffer (yesterday) about what we can do better.

“There isn’t a lot wrong, but obviously we need to fine tune a few things and go from there.

“Hopefully if we can pick up a few clean sheets that would give us a bit of confidence to go and win a few games.”

Northampton have no such concerns after three successive league victories.

The Cobblers have scored freely, with Adebayo Akinfenwa in the best form of his career.

The bulky striker can be a real handful at times and has 13 goals to his name already this term.

Whing is looking forward to crossing swords again, after the striker accidentally injured him in the same fixture last season.

He said: “He didn’t mean it, he was just trying to get across me.

“I think it was a broken nose and split lip inside the first 20 seconds.

“He’s a massive unit, I’ve played against him quite a few times and he can shift, he’s not slow.

“For his size he’s quite mobile, but we know what his strengths are – he doesn’t need to jump, he just gets his body in the way.

“We’ve got a plan to try and deal with him, hopefully that will work.”
