Shakespeare are the new Oxford Summer League champions after winning the final round on the Thames between Medley and Folly, fished by 53 anglers.

It is their third league crown of the summer, having already captured the Winter League final and Division 1 of the National Championships. They amassed 49 points.

Joint second on the day were Oxford Drennan GOTBaits, who led the race up to Sunday’s finale, and Daiwa Dorking, both recording 41 points.

Paul Passmore Turners Tackle & Bait) became the first man to retain his title, notching 49 points.

He edged out Mickey Ellyatt (Oxford Drennan GOTBaits), who finished on 48, while joint third were John Hasler (Fox Match Isis) and Tony Bench (Shakespeare).

The Thames featured lots of double-figure weights on Sunday and 20lb was not enough to make the top ten.

Gary Pook (Daiwa Dorking) fished groundbait feeder with either single worm or worm/maggot cocktail hookbaits to catch a dozen bream for 48.14.0, just enough to win ahead of a string of bream weights all taken by anglers in the Perch Bay area.

Tony Bench (Shakespeare) kept up his remarkable form, using a groundbait feeder packed with chopped worm/caster for 44.13.0 and second.

Third place went to Rob Bassett (Garbolino Banbury Gunsmiths), who landed nine bream for 39.3.0.

Ridgeway was the venue for the latest Carp League 2009 match fished by 17 and it produced no fewer than nine weights over the ton.

Ivan Graham (J&K) topped the field with a net of carp weighing 183.14.0 taken from down the edge on maggot.

Also fishing maggot down the edge, RS Baits' Andy Wiffen weighed in 172.3 for second place, followed by Steve Johnson (Maggots End), who fished pole and maggot for 166.5.0 and third.

Beehive AC had to switch their FA Cup and UEFA Cup finals from Panshill to Rye Hill due to a booking error, and the 15 matchmen endured hard fishing as the carp were more interested in sunbathing.

Martin Wilkinson cast his method feeder 70 yards to finish with 54.12.0 for top place.

Kevin Jeacock caught three big carp in the last 15 minutes on pole and maggot for 40.12.0 and second, while Nigel Waters fished pole and corn for 33.12.0 and third.

Masons held their annual outing at Makins Fishery, where the 20 members found Avon Lake hard work.

Gary Pether triumphed with eight carp caught in the last hour of the match on pellet for 36.2.0.

He was followed by Andy Benwell, who netted ten carp on corn down the edge for 26.4.0, and third with 17.8.0 was Martin Robinson, with carp and barbel, alternating between corn and pellet.

The final match in this year’s Carp Class 2009 Summer League was fished at Butler’s Hill by 21 anglers who were pegged on the bottom and middle lakes.

The first t hree came from the middle lake, with Dave Williams taking 32.9.0 of carp on either worm or corn.

Sat next to him, Phil Weston used corn or pellet for 30.8.0 of carp, followed by Pete Wilsdon, who banked four carp on corn for 18.8.0.

Final points: D Wilsdon 56, P Woodley 40.5, P Wilsdon 40.

Littlemore fished their Chairman’s Cup at Sandford, where Gerald Perks won with 14.11.0 of quality roach on waggler with hemp and caster. He also won the golden peg.

Alan Campbell chose to fish waggler with hemp and tares, taking 9.4.0 of roach for second, while Terry Woodwood was third with another net of seed-caught roach weighing 8.12.0.

Eleven members of Kidlington fished a gin-clear Thames at Clanfield for their Bert Alder Cup.

Jason Bean landed a bream of 4lb, plus some perch, on maggot or worm for a winning 7.7.0.

A net of small roach and perch worth 4.14.0 earned Alan Middleton second, while Giles Cuss used pole and maggot and caught a tiny barbel weighing 1lb, plus perch, for 4.13.0 and third.

It was total chaos on the Cherwell at Marston, where North Oxford AS held their latest club match.

Punts were everywhere, but it did not put off the eight anglers.

Starting off on the pole and punch and then switching to red maggot, Anthony Tompkins won with 7.5.0 of roach, well clear of Ron Hamblin with 4.10.0 of small roach, and third-placed John Coleman with 4.5.0.

The Thames at Wallingford had hardly any flow but some colour for the 11 matchmen fishing the Jolly Anglers’ match on the Town waters.

Warren Cave fished pole with worm to catch perch and skimmers for a winning 8.14.0.

Bill Davis netted around 40 roach on waggler and maggot for a second-place 7.9.0 to pip Ryan MacDonald, who fished waggler with maggot, by two ounces.

The Oxford Waltonian match for the Keep Cup at Cuddesdon Mill was disrupted by the discovery of a man found dead on the banks of the River Thame, as reported in Monday’s Oxford Mail.

Paramedics tried to revive him, but he was declared dead on the scene.

Police blocked the road, which meant some anglers were unable to fish.

In the end, five fished pegs that they wouldn’t normally use.

Tony Gee (Acorn Angling) was the outright winner with four bream for 23.8.0 the best going 7lb. He used caster and worm, catching in two feet of water on the whip.

Paul Bowers used the whip and maggot to take gudgeon, dace and roach for 4.8.0, followed by Barry Edwards with 3.15.0.
