MATT French has an added motivation to win his second Commonwealth Games medal – it could prove to be his last double trap competition.

The 36-year-old, from Oakley, near Aston Rowant, takes to the stand at the Belmont Shooting Centre, on Wednesday, April 11.

French, who won silver in Glasgow four years ago, is in the middle of a slow transition to skeet, due to double trap being removed from the Olympic programme.

It means saying goodbye to a sport he has been dedicated to for more than 12 years and the Oxford-born shooter admits it would be nice to end in style on the Gold Coast.

“Yes, potentially the Commonwealth Games could be it,” said French, who flew out to Australia on March 25.

“Not only the final shoot, but the final (double trap) shoot event internationally and domestically.

“It’s all come to a close unless it comes back into an Olympic programme.

“This could be the grand farewell, it would be nice to do it justice and go out on a high.”

Four years ago in Glasgow, French was pipped by one clay target as he lost out in the gold medal match to England teammate Steve Scott.

He is fully aware he will have to be at the very top of his game to challenge again.

French said: “It would be nice (to win gold).

“When you get that close, it’s hard to not want to go one better – I’ll try to get into the final and see what happens.

“The standard is just as high, if not harder this time around.

“Some of the older guard have moved on and there are some extremely talented people coming in.

“It will be tough, but fantastic to take it a step further.”
