NICHOLAS Skelton was the star as City of Oxford claimed eight medals at the British Summer National Championships in Ponds Forge, Sheffield.

The 14-year-old produced a medal hat-trick in the men’s backstroke events.

After gaining silvers in the 50m and 100m races, in 28.51secs and 1min 00.70 secs respectively, Skelton won gold in the 200m in a pb of 2.11.37.

Clubmate Callum Smart stormed into the finals of all three breaststroke distances, clinching the gold medal in the 200m in 2.17.94.

The previous week, Smart came fourth when representing Wales at the same event in the Youth Commonwealth Games in the Bahamas.

He is now preparing to represent Britain at the Junior World Championships later this month.

Teammate, Toby MacKay-Champion claimed bronze in the men’s open 200m breaststroke in Sheffield in a stunning best of 2.12.91.

Another bronze came from David Murphy, in the breaststroke with 1.01.32.

Billy Wootton, 14, swam a brave race in the age group 200m breaststroke to claim a silver medal.

Emily Wood (18) achieved a bronze medal in the 200m breaststroke in a time of 2.38.63.
