CITY of Oxford finished third as they hosted the opening round of the Milton Keynes Junior League.

The squad claimed 11 victories, second only to winners Teddington, but they were squeezed out overall by Windsor by virtue of having fewer second places.

A promising start in the team events saw City’s 11-year-old boys win their freestyle and medley relays.

The 12-year-old girls also came out on top in the medley relay, while the ten-year-old girls finished strongly to take a narrow win.

Pearl Sophastienphong, part of the latter’s squad, also claimed individual glory over 50 metres in the backstroke and freestyle events.

Lachlan Middleton was also a multiple winner, adding 50m butterfly to the 11-year-old team successes.

His relay teammate Kayden Sillah did likewise in the 50m breaststroke – an event City dominated.

Ellen Bagley and Ollie Conway, the only individual winner not involved in a relay win, clinched the 12-year-old races, while Zara Porter stormed clear in the ten-year-old 50m butterfly.

  • TWO Wantage White Horse swimmers have been invited to compete at next month’s English Championship at Ponds Forge, Sheffield.

James Bunyard will compete in the 100m freestyle, while Geo Ratouly, who has also qualified for the British Championships, is in the 50m and 200m events for the same stroke.

White Horse’s head coach Bruce Rennie said: “To have two individuals reaching the top is an amazing accolade and they have worked incredibly hard.”
