West Witney’s Kevin Alder retained the Oxfordshire BA’s Officers Cup in a tense and thrilling final against Witney Town’s Brian Bloomfield at Oxford City & County.

A tight game, in which neither bowler had more than three shots lead at any time, reached its exciting climax on the 27th and last end with the contestants level at 20-20.

It was then that Alder produced the one shot needed to put his name in the record books for a second year.

In their semi-finals, Alder had overcome South Oxford’s Richard Green 21-12, while Bloomfield recorded a 21-5 win against Roy Edney from Oxford BC, which closes at the end of the season.

Bloomfield also featured in the final of the Longford Cup against Othman Sharif, who was playing on his own green.

With the scores level at 8-8 each after 11 ends, Sharif scored on the next five to open up an eight-shot lead.

His opponent fought hard but was unable to get any closer than four shots before Sharif finished the game with a single on the 25th end for a 21-16 victory and condemn Bloomfield to another runners-up position.

Sharif’s semi-final saw him beat fellow City & County bowler David Wedge 21-14.

Bloomfield had a 13-end success against South Oxford’s Richard Claridge in a match played in the morning due to the Witney man’s involvement in two competitions.

The third final of the day was the Allison Cup, for unbadged players.

This saw Banbury Central’s Nigel Galletly up taking on Charlbury bowler Tim Ryan.

Galletly went into an early lead, and although a run of three singles brought Ryan to within four shots at 11-7, the Banbury man retaliated with five shots over the next two ends.

After dropping a two, he brought the game to a close with a three and a two to take the title with a 21-9 win.

The semi-finals saw Galletly beat Headington’s Alan Manger 21-8, while Ryan won a 24-end game against Oxford’s Garry Watts 21-16.
