Cassington's Nigel Fancourt claimed bronze at the British Veterans’ Fencing Championships in Gloucester, narrowly missing out on a place in the final.

In his first veterans competition, Fancourt, was beaten 10-8 in the semi final by former British champion Chris Howser.

The 53-year-old was seeded 27th out of the 77-strong field.

Fancourt advanced to the elimination round after making his way through two poules stages with six wins.

Four direct elimination victories booked his place in the last four.

In the semi final, Fancourt, a former Great Britain fencer, took an early 3-0 lead against Howser, who claimed gold overall.

They traded hits to 8-8, before Howser snatched the last two points to leave Fancourt with a bronze medal.
