Witney Ladies Hockey 1XI have been promoted to National League for the 2021/22 season following an incredible third promotion in only four years.

Ladies club captain Julia Nichols said: “This is a huge milestone for any club but made even more impressive by the fact that much of the squad is comprised of home-grown players, educated locally and who still live and work in the town.”

The Witney team play under the guidance of coach and ex-international goalkeeper Chris Boyle.

They will now compete in the National League Conference West alongside many respected hockey clubs.

Ms Nichols said: “This is an amazing opportunity for Witney Hockey which will see large clubs from around the country visiting their home ground at Wood Green School.

“The club have been fortunate to enjoy an excellent relationship with both the school and Witney Rugby Club, where fitness sessions and match teas are hosted. Bringing the school and two established sports clubs together, has been instrumental in promoting sport to the local community.”

The promotion has already benefited both the club and the school with additional sponsorship and crowdfunding for new dug outs and improvements to facilities.

Witney Hockey has a growing junior section with spaces available for professional coaching and the chance to play competitive matches.

The club are also launching a 4XI Ladies team for up-and-coming youngsters, returners and those trying hockey for the first time.

Witney’s men's sides have also been enjoying success in recent seasons.
