HOCKEY: Oxford given first taste of defeat

Oxford Mail: Wallingford's Charlie Lester puts his side 1-0 up against Ashford Wallingford's Charlie Lester puts his side 1-0 up against Ashford

Oxford got their first taste of defeat this season as they went down 3-1 at Eastcote in MBBO Regional Division 1 of the South League.

Chris Way started and finished a move to put Oxford ahead, Eastcote levelling via a penalty stroke after Ben Richards blocked a short- corner strike on the line.

After the break, the home side took the lead for the first time via another penalty, keeper Chris Mitty getting a glove to the ball, but unable to prevent it finding the backboard.

Dan Bleach and Andy Wynd went close as Oxford fought back, but a third Eastcote goal from a disputed short corner finished them off. Unbeaten Oxford Hawks 2nd remain top after a 5-0 thrashing of Staines 2nd thanks to goals from Chris Burden (2), Sean Duval and Ed Baldock. Hawks’ first team got back to form with a 3-2 victory at Eastbourne in Premier Division 1.

Wallingford extended their winning streak to four games in Regional Division 1 as they saw off Ashford 4-2. Charlie Lester, Jamie Charleston and Alun Lloyd put the home side 3-1 up at the break and Horatio Cary increased the lead in the second half.

Ashford scored a second short-corner goal with ten minutes left, but Wallingford finished comfortable victors.

Witney cemented second place in Division 2 by hammering Gerrards Cross 7-3.

Captain Tim Hardy was the star of the show with four goals, the others coming from Liam Frost (2) and Jacob Deacon.

Bicester followed up last week’s win over leaders Milton Keynes with a 2-1 triumph at Ashford.

Dan Round and Roy Carter combined to set up Stu Locke for Bicester’s opener, Ashford hitting back to equalise.

The winner came with five minutes left. Jon Rodger won Bicester another corner and CJ Birtles netted.
