A SECOND goal in three FA Women’s Super League 2 Spring Series games was no consolation for Oxford United’s Ini Umotong as they were beaten 3-1 at London Bees.
Umotong’s 88th-minute strike came too late to affect the outcome of the game as the U’s continue to wait for their first win of the season.
“It’s always great to get a goal but it’s disappointing when they’re meaningless,” she said.
“We had way more opportunities than they did, so it’s very disappointing to come away with a loss.”
United paid the price for a sluggish start as they trailed by three goals at half-time.
Hana Lalani opened the scoring after just six minutes with a left-footed strike from the edge of the box.
The Bees doubled their advantage when Emma Beckett headed home, in the process clashing heads with Oxford’s 16-year-old debutant goalkeeper Lucy Thomas, with both being taken off injured.
The introduction of regular keeper Demi Lambourne did little to change U’s fortunes as they fell further behind before the break, to an unstoppable shot from Bees captain Ashleigh Goddard.
The U’s huffed and puffed in a frustrating second half, but did finally get themselves on the scoresheet two minutes from time, Umotong firing home from the edge of the area.
But it was too late to prevent a second defeat.
