Sutton Wanderers sprang one of the biggest surprises in the history of the Critchleys Upper Thames Valley League's Devenney Cup with a penalty shoot-out win at home to Oxford Sports & Social Club in the semi-finals, writes TIM SIRET.

The Division 2 minnows had led three times against the understrength Premier Lea-gue champions-elect as the tie ended 3-3 after extra time.

Goalkeeper David Hutton was Sutton’s hero with two superb penalty saves from Luke Bremner and Craig Hambridge.

Jake Lewis, Andy Conway, Tyron Willett and Phil Stringer beat stand-in Oxford keeper Piers McGlynn to claim a thrilling 4-3 triumph in the shoot-out.

The game had started in dramatic fashon, with Sutton’s Chris Stringer spurning a spot-kick after just four minutes as Bremner, who started as a stand-in keeper, made a fine stop.

Wanderers took the lead on three occasions through Lewis, Phil Hammond and Stringer only to be pegged back by Hambridge, Julian McCalmon and Bremner, who came out from between the sticks, to head a late equaliser.

Sutton face Kidlington Royals, who won 6-3 at home to Barton United, in the final at Abingdon Town on Sunday (6pm).

Lewis Coyle bagged a brace for Royals in their semi-final success, with Tom Franklin, Ryan Curtin, Anaclet Odhiambo and Kieron Davis also on target. Aaron Williams, Joe Cook and Shaun Hurcombe replied for Barton.

Brightwell missed the chance to close the gap at the top of Division 1 with a 2-1 home defeat by Railway Wheatley.

Andy Gibbons scored for the hosts, but Railway triumphed thanks to strikes from Tom Williams and Sam Graham.

Waldemar Kruk fired a four-timer in Zubry Oxford’s 8-1 win at bottom club Standlake Garage.

Tim Senior opened the scoring, but Zubry zoomed back, with Lukasz Wolinski, Seb Ciekielski, Tomasz Serednicki and Tomasz Samoluk completing their tally.

Dean Costar’s brace included a late winner as Saxton Pirates came from behind to triumph 3-2 at Rutherford Lab.

John Hawkins’s double after the break had given Rutherford the advantage, before Cole and Costar levelled. The Tree Grove were crowned Division 2 champions with a 3-0 win at Forest Hill.

Rob Joyce’s double and a Jonny James strike were enough to wrap up the title.

AFC Valley won 4-0 at home to White Horse Abingdon. Andrew Cummings, Nathan Brown, Ben Steptoe and Tom Srawley did the damage.

Iffley Harriers’ promotion hopes were dented as they let slip a two-goal lead in a 2-2 draw at Abingdon Exiles.

Dan Pear and Martin Taylor put Harriers 2-0 up, but Andy Aldington and John Hudson secured a point for Exiles.

Green Tree Wallingford won 5-0 at home to North Oxford Conservative Club to leapfrog their rivals at the top of Division 3.

Sam Elkins smashed a brace with Liam Wilkinson, Matt Baker and Martin Dawson also on target. Charlie Silkstone’s hat-trick helped AFC Brightwell to a 6-5 win at Milton Midgets.

Martin White, Toby Arup and Jack McLaughlin’s hotly-disputed penalty made up Brightwell’s tally, with James Carlini (2), Dave Cheesman, Paddy Reagan and Darren Hutchins the Milton marksmen.
