EVO-STIK Southern League officials have condemned the pitch invasion which forced Didcot Town's home match against Hereford to be abandoned on Saturday.

An investigation is under way after fans raced on to the field of play during the Division 1 South & West clash.

One supporter confronted Didcot goalkeeper Leigh Bedwell after Hereford had scored an 88th-minute goal to go 2-1 up.

As players rushed to intervene, more Hereford fans came on to the Loop Meadow Stadium’s playing surface.

Police were called and, once all supporters were removed from the pitch, referee Wayne Chalmers abandoned the game.

Two men have been arrested on suspicion of a public order offence.

The league issued a statement this morning and are considering the matter.

It reads: "Whilst the league is not yet in possession of the full facts surrounding the abandonment of the Division One South & West match between Didcot Town and Hereford on Saturday 4th March, the Evo-Stik League Southern condemns the reported behaviour of some individuals that led to the reason for the match referee taking the necessary action in abandoning the match.

"The matter is being considered by the FA following an extraordinary incident report being submitted and until the matter is concluded by them, the Evo-Stik League Southern is not permitted to take any action.

"However, the league intends to liaise with its member clubs to help prevent any repetition of these events."
