OXFORD City’s four-match unbeaten run was brought to an end in disappointing fashion as they were comprehensively beaten 3-0 at Weston-super-Mare, writes MATTHEW BRUCE

Efforts from Dayle Grubb and Bradley Ash put the home side two goals up at half-time, with Ash adding a third from the penalty spot late on in the Vanarama National League South clash.

City had started brightly and could have taken the lead in just the third minute when Wilson Carvalho crossed for Kaiman Anderson, whose volley was superbly tipped over by goalkeeper Luke Purnell.

That was the closest City would come, however, as Weston seized control.

Only a goalline clearance from Jordy Ngathe prevented Ash from opening the scoring seven minutes in, but it proved a temporary reprieve as the hosts went ahead after 20 minutes.

Collecting the ball near the left-hand touchline, Grubb was allowed acres of space to carry the ball into the danger area before curling it into the bottom corner.

The lively Ash, on loan from Barnsley, got on the scoresheet with just over half-an-hour played as he brilliantly turned his man to race clean through before blasting home.

Moments later, Weston had the ball in the net a third time when Jake Lee latched onto a through ball and slotted it beneath keeper Craig Hill, only for it to be ruled out for offside.

Scott Davies went close to putting City back in touch moments before half-time, drawing another strong save from Purnell with a well-struck free-kick.

But that would be City’s last notable chance as they were effectively shut out of the game in the second half.

The City keeper was again kept busy, tipping over a snapshot from Ash shortly after the restart.

He was beaten from a tight angle by Grubb 16 minutes from time, only to be saved by centre back Jean Niate waiting on the line to hack the ball clear.

But just two minutes later Grubb was carelessly tripped in the box by Davies and Ash coolly despatched the resulting penalty to put the seal on a disappointing day for City.
