BANBURY United crashed out in the first qualifying round of the Buildbase FA Trophy after a surprise 1-0 defeat to lower -league Bishops Cleeve.

A combination of poor finishing from the Evo-Stik Southern League Premier Division outfit and exceptional goalkeeping by Matt Wieczorek proved the difference.

The Division 1 South & West visitors booked their place in the next round when Jacob Davidge headed past Jack Harding on 77 minutes.

Cleeve created the first real opening of the tie when Ben Hayes somehow failed to turn the ball in at the far post following Jack Watts’s cross.

But Banbury’s Conor McDonagh and George Nash were then both denied by Wieczorek within a few seconds of each other.

George Jeacock saw his shot saved by Wieczorek and rounded off the half by bursting away from defender Tom Hoksins and narrowly shooting wide of the target.

The visitors started the second period brighter and went close to opening the scoring when Paul Holmes rattled a post.

Banbury, though, began to find a foothold, and substitute Zach McEachran was denied, before Ricky Johnson headed wide.

But it was Cleeve who stole the victory with 13 minutes remaining as Davidge’s header hit a post and found its way past Harding.
