A SCREAMER from Scott Davies proved in vain as Oxford City were beaten 3-1 at home to Vanarama National League South leaders Maidenhead United last night.
Goals from James Mulley after 19 minutes and a Sean Marks header three minutes before the break saw Justin Merritt’s side facing an uphill task.
They were given hope with 22 minutes remaining though, when Davies rifled a 25-yard effort into the top corner of the net.
But City were unable to find an equaliser and Maidenhead made the game safe in the 91st minute when Dave Tarpey fired home a free-kick.
Oxford City: Stevens, Ngathe (Isaac 58), Grant, Ashby (Winters 65), Cundy, Poku, Davies, Fleet (Patterson 87), Fondop, Ofuso, Giles. Subs not used: Soares, Neto.
George Nash hit the only goal as Banbury United beat Chippenham Town 1-0 in the Evo-Stik Southern League Premier Division.
Nash fired home after good work from Mark Bell in the 19th minute.
Andy Gunn was then sent off for Banbury, and Chippenham’s David Pratt also saw red leaving the sides to play the second half with ten men apiece.
But neither could find a breakthrough as Mike Ford’s men claimed the three points.
