Prolific striker Adi Yussuf struck twice as Oxford City came from behind to beat visitibgf Lowestoft Town 2-1 in Vanarama Cinference North on Saturday, writes Matthew Bruce.

Yussuf ’s goals, which made him the league’s joint top scorer with 21, secured City’s third victory in a row.

But they had to do it the hard way after falling behind to Daniel Eagle’s first-half effort.

Eagle’s stunning strike was a rare moment of brilliance in an otherwise turgid first half played on a boggy Marsh Lane pitch which ruined any attempts to play a flowing passing game.

City were the first to try their luck when Yussuf raced onto a through ball, but his shot was blocked and Tom Winters blazed over on the rebound.

Sam Gaugharan almost caught City keeper Mark Scott off-guard with a deft chip, but the back-pedalling keeper tipped it over the bar.

Neither side looked likely to score, but with half-time looming the visitors were presented with a dangerous free-kick on the edge of the box following a foul by Lee Henderson.

Eagle stepped up and rifled his shot past the wall and into the top corner, giving Scott no chance.

City needed just six second-half minutes to level the scores.

Yussuf netted from the penalty spot after Declan Benjamin had been tripped in the area by Andrew Fisk.

Nigerian midfielder Samuel Obot, who has spent most of his career playing in Hungary, replaced captain Darren Pond shortly after the hour mark for his debut after signing on Thursday.

He made a lively start to his career in English football, when an incisive passing move found him in the area, but his effort was smothered.

That came just moments after Winters should have put City in front after Luke Coulson’s cross found him unmarked in front of goal.

But when a decent touch would have resulted in a certain goal, Winters could not control the ball.

It was the home side asking all the questions, however, and they completed the comeback five minutes from time.

Marlon Jackson somehow squeezed the ball through for Yussuf, who took one touch to open up a shooting opportunity before guiding it past the Lowestoft goalkeeper.

Oxford City: Scott, Coulson, Stonehouse, Fofana, Henderson, Lapoujade, Benjamin, Pond (Obot 67), Yussuf, Jackson, Winters (Wilson 84). Subs not used: Rodriguez, Santiago, Barcelos.
