Banbury United boss Paul Davis has urged his side to use their shock midweek win against Oxford City to help catapult them up the table.

The Southern League Premier Division basement boys beat the Vanarama Conference North outfit 2-1 in the Oxfordshire Senior Cup quarter-final and Davis is looking for a repeat show against third-placed visitors Truro City tomorrow.

“It’s a bit of a morale booster for us to beat the best side we will probably play all season,” said Davis.

“We got a good performance under our belts and hopefully it will give us a lift against Truro, though we won’t know how much until after Saturday.

“After the debacle at Cambridge where we conceded four goals in 13 minutes (in a 6-1 loss), it was helpful to have a game.

“City put a strong side out and I was a bit worried because we hardly touched the ball in the first 20 minutes, but we got ourselves into the game and scored a last-minute winner.”

Davis, who includes Nabil Shariff in the squad, says Truro will present a similarly difficult test.

He added: “They are a big, strong physical side, which gives us a different problem.

“The ball probably won’t stay on the ground and they’ve got experienced professionals like Barry Hayles, so it will be tough, but they have to travel for six hours in a coach.”
