Bridgwater Tn 2

Wantage Tn 0

Wantage Town’s first visit to Fairfax Park ended in disappointment as two second-half goals sent them spinning to defeat against Bridgwater Town in Evo-Stik Southern League Division 1 South & West.

The lowly Alfredians held their mid-table hosts in the first half, which saw Bridgwater create the better opportunities.

Dave O’Hare shot just wide, while Ross McNab’s header brought a good save out of Wantage goalkeeper Gareth Tucker.

However, the visitors cracked in the 53rd minute when McNab volleyed home.

The Bridgwater goalscorer then went close to adding a second, while Tom Knighton had an effort cleared off the Wantage line.

Daniel Barry’s side kept battling as they went in search of an equaliser.

But their fate was sealed in the last minute when Bridgwater caught them on the break, and Jack Welling raced away to grab the hosts’ second goal.

Wantage stay third from bottom following the defeat, just outside the relegation zone.

However, they remain nine points clear of second-bottom Bishops Cleeve, with Bashley a further two points adrift at the foot of the table.

And they will be looking to draw further clear of the bottom two when they entertain basement boys Bashley on Saturday.

Wantage won the reverse fixture 6-1 in October.
