FOOTBALL: City break away duck in Sunday cruise

8:30am Monday 9th December 2013

Oxford City moved further away from the foot of the table after a comfortable 2-0 success against Worcester in Skrill North yesterday.

City dominated the first 30 minutes and raced to a two-goal lead thanks to goals from Tom Winters and Marvin Robinson.

And that was enough to clinch a first away win for Mike Ford’s men in a match played at Kidderminster.

The visitors started brightly and put the hosts under immediate pressure.

Winters was a particular threat, twice shooting narrowly wide in the opening minutes as the Worcester defence failed to close him down.

And it was Winters who gave City the lead after 15 minutes, cutting in from the right and shooting, with the unfortunate Matt Regan deflecting the ball past his own goalkeeper Jose Veiga.

The onslaught continued and City doubled their lead five minutes later when Robinson headed into an empty net after Veiga missed an easy punch.

Andy Ballard spurned a fantastic opportunity to add a third after arriving late at the far post to meet a corner, but failed to make contact.

The hosts had a spell of pressure of their own at the end of the half, with Daniel Nti going close, but City were mostly untroubled.

The second half was less compelling.

Worcester pressed, but it was the visitors who created the best chances.

Winters latched on to captain Darren Pond’s excellent through ball, but was denied by the legs of Veiga, and Robinson was also foiled as City eased home.

Oxford City: Scott, Ballard, Stonehouse, Pook, Learoyd, Willmott, Jackson (Palmer 90), Malone (Benjamin 69), Robinson (Symons 81), Pond, Winters. Subs not used: McNish, Cook.

Referee: G Stretton. Attendance: 442.
