Oxford United boss is prepared to wait

GARY Waddock will wait as long as it takes in order to bring the right players into Oxford United.

The U’s head coach has only so far signed striker Danny Hylton as he shapes his squad for next season’s campaign.

But while several other Sky Bet League Two clubs have made numerous acquisition, Waddock is prepared to sit tight to ensure that any new faces fit the criteria he is looking for.

“There is an awful amount of hard work and preparation that is being done here, everyone can rest assured of that,” he said.

“I’m like every other fan and in an ideal world the whole squad would be assembled the day after Northampton match.

“But that just doesn’t happen.

“You can’t just phone up a player, meet him the next day and get every- thing done and dusted straight away – that’s not the way it is.”

The United boss added: “It is crucial that we make sure we get the right kind of people in.

“We know the types of player we want and we are all working extremely hard to make sure that happens.”

Waddock has held plenty of meetings with potential signings and their representatives and is hopeful of transfer activity in the near future.

But the former Wycombe Wanderers boss says he will not be rushed into anything.

“My phone has constantly been on charge with all the use it’s getting at the minute,” he said.

“I have had numerous meetings with players and agents.

“We’ve missed out on one or two and when that happens you have to start the whole process over again.

“But it’s the busiest time of the year by far and it’s all about getting the right players in, which I am confident we will do.”

The U’s squad report back for pre-season at the end of the month, and while their boss would like to have added to his squad by then, he appreciates there are advantages of playing a waiting game.

Players still without a contract often drop their demands the closer it gets to pre-season, and with many clubs having already spent most of their budget on new faces, others can pounce.

“That’s certainly one positive,” he commented.

“Players want to look at their options and see what’s out there, of course they do.

“But at the back of their mind as pre-season looms is that they have not got a club and want to be involved somewhere.

“We have kept the majority of the squad from last season and we weren’t far away, so it’s a case of making sure the new additions are the right ones.

“I’m willing to be patient to make sure that’s the case.”

He gambling that the players left after all the signings will be of the quality that we need!!!!! It still sounds like he is being controlled re spendings etc.
The team could report back & we don't have a full squad.

So he's waiting for players to drop their demands as pre season looms. Surely if they haven't got a club by then they aren't the type of players people think can do a job for the team. So why do we wait to pick up all the sh*t that no one else wants. Frustrates me big time! Have fun watching next season I'm so glad I didn't renew my season ticket. It's always great when you support Oxford and England and neither can do very well!

Do yourselves all a big favour - look on the positive side - at the moment we are equal top of the league. It must be so depressing being you!!! We all want the same thing don't we? Really, I mean it, don't we? Sometimes reading these posts makes me think that there are some who actually love the moaning and crave failure so that they can continue to feel so self righteous. I'm backing the Manager and am convinced that he is a very good coach and will make us more competitive this season. However, if I am wrong, one thing I will not do is get dragged down by it and post depressing articles on this website. Oxford till I die - and I truly mean that!

Yes. But others say 'look before you leap'. We obviously have limited funds and should not panic buy the wrong players. On the other hand, I am a little concerned with the 'we've missed out on 1 or 2' comment which suggests we are not an attractive option. The question is why? In this business money talks so I can only assume GW is having to whisper the offers. With 1st choice purchases unobtainable I think he is now right to wait for the best of the rest. He can only work within a budget, we will now find out his coaching abilities!

On the striker striker front very impressed with AFC Wimbledon forward like. Two strikers to play off each other that will net them 20 to 25 goals next season. How did they pull those two off, especially as one rejected a new offer at Gillingham to go there. They cannot have much money. Pompey have a decent forward from Walsall and Northampton have got one as well. Zola has gone to Stevenage which is a good Freeby to acquire. Waddock will get any players he needs next month. By that time we will know the money from season tickets so can balance income versus cost. Waddock worries me as a manager based on the impact he had when he came into our club and the players still retained. Come August it will be based on results and that is what counts.

well spotted oldun I got myself confused in all the excitement of a new manager with a dreadful record plucking promises out of thin air to appease and patronise long suffering supporters!! If we're losing [layers to non league clubs and league clubs with half the gates we get I can only assume salaries are more attractive elsewhere and we're relying on bargain bin signings.
