  • "Let's face it, this signing isn't quite what we're looking for but let's ensure he's given the benefit of the doubt and some big encouragement in his first few games as at the end of the season he'll be judged on his goals.

Hopefully Waddock can get the best out of our players next season and prove the motivational qualities that he promises. Also, hope Waddock is given the resource to press on with rebuilding this threadbare squad. Time to step up IL!"

Oxford United's new signing Hylton banks on new start

Oxford Mail: Danny Hylton, seen battling for the ball with Oxford United’s Andy Whing while playing for Aldershot Town in a Johnstone’s Paint Trophy tie three years ago, can’t wait to link up with his new teammates Danny Hylton, seen battling for the ball with Oxford United’s Andy Whing while playing for Aldershot Town in a Johnstone’s Paint Trophy tie three years ago, can’t wait to link up with his new teammates

Danny Hylton is hoping that Gary Waddock will again get the best out of him after yesterday completing his move to Oxford United.

The 25-year-old striker played under the U’s head coach when he was at Aldershot, and says that his spell at the Recreation Ground was his best in professional football.

Hylton has signed a two-year deal at the Kassam Stadium, and is hoping to put a disappointing campaign behind him.

The 6ft forward made just one appearance for Sky Bet League One side Rotherham, spending part of the season on loan at Bury and AFC Wimbledon.

But Hylton says he is delighted to have completed his move to Oxford, and can't wait for the season to get under way.

“I enjoyed every minute when Gary was my manager before and he was a massive factor in me coming here,” Hylton said.

“He has belief in you and a good style of play. He likes to play good attacking football and hopefully the fans will enjoy it. It’s a fresh start for me and I am really excited – I can’t wait to get going now.”

Hylton scored 48 times in 139 starts for Aldershot, before moving to Rotherham last summer.

However, things did not go well at the New York Stadium, the striker making just one appearance for the Millers at Brentford in October.

A week later, he went on loan to Bury, where he scored twice in seven starts and then in January went to Wimbledon where he netted three times in ten starts.

“I went to Rotherham and it didn’t work out how I wanted it to, but that’s part of football,” he added.

“You can’t predict what’s going to happen and you have to experience the lows as well as the highs. It can only make you stronger.

“I now know what it’s like to not really play for a year and I don’t want to go through that again.”

Hylton, who was handed an eight-match ban in May 2012 after being found guilty of two charges of racial abuse, will link up with his new teammates when they report back for pre-season.
