Oxford United keeper Clarke has op on troublesome toe

Oxford Mail: Ryan Clarke Ryan Clarke

RYAN Clarke has started his recovery from a foot injury after undergoing surgery.

The Oxford United goalkeeper went under the knife on Tuesday to correct a problem which affected him in the second half of last season.

After an appointment last month, a specialist recommended the 32-year-old needed an operation on his big right toe.

A return date is unclear at this stage, but it is feared Clarke could miss the opening month of next season.

Meanwhile, former Oxford United striker Alex Fisher will come up against his old club next season after signing for Mansfield Town.

The 23-year-old came through the U’s youth ranks, but left in 2009 after making just one league start.

After a spell at Oxford City, he went to the Glenn Hoddle Academy in Spain and has since played in Belgium and Italy.

Fisher was most recently playing in Serie C for AC Monza and the move to Field Mill is still subject to international clearance.

He said: “My ambition has always been to come back to England and play at home, so when the opportunity presented itself to come here through a few contacts, I jumped at it.”

How come he and the club knew about this and waited until now to have the operation? He should have had it the day after the season ended.

Lenegan and Waddonk ruining the club? Twerps.

It does seem strange that the club waits until after the season for RC to have a specialist appointment, which resulted in the decision to have the surgery. It's a valid question, why did the club wait until after the season before acting on the player's injury? In theory if the appointment had taken place before the end of the season then the surgery could have happened after the last game (like BigAlBiker suggested) and RC's anticipated comeback would have coincided with the start of the new season. Bizarre! Why did Oxford Mail not challenge the club on this point when they wrote this article?? Is the Oxford Mail just a printing outlet for OUFC media releases??? Do they not have investigative journalists with half a brain????

With RC likely to miss the start of the season we know where one likely signing will be... A loan Goalkeeper!!! so that is one signing down the drain. Once it was realized the season was over for us (early April) would it not have been better to get RC off to the specialist and then have the operation. I am sure we could have got an emergency cover goalkeeper in to help out. Ah well I suspect the club/player have their reasons whatever they may be.

I have no problem if this means Crocombe will get an opportunity. But, I've said this before, but why wasn't this dealt with earlier? Also if he had the appointment last month, why is he only just had surgery? He could have been a month closer to coming back rather than risk missing the start of the season.
