OXFORD University batsman Sam Agarwal earned himself a place in cricket’s record books yesterday by becoming the first player to score a triple century in a Varsity Match.

The 22-year-old Indian-born batsman, who has just finished his degree in material science at The Queen’s College, made 313 not out as the Dark Blues rattled up a massive 550-7 declared on the second day against their old rivals Cambridge at Fenner’s.

His massive knock came at almost a run-a-ball and contained 41 fours and three sixes.

Agarwal was on 213 not out overnight and quickly passed the previous best Varsity Match individual score of 247, made by Oxford’s Salil Oberoi at the same venue in 2005.

His 300 came up to joyous applause from his teammates off 307 balls in 410 minutes.

Cambridge had been thoroughly outgunned and worse was to come when they replied.

The Light Blues managed just 119 against the spin of Sachin Mylavarapu (5-23) swing of Tom Williams (5-34) as they collapsed to 119 all out.

It left them trailing by 431 with two days remaining.

Agarwal, who was winning his fourth and final Blue, was desperate to finish his spell at Oxford in style, especially as he was leading the side.

He said: “It is my last year here and I especially wanted to do well, almost like leaving a legacy. “It was a really nice feeling to reach 300 and then to bowl them out cheaply was a bonus.

“We have done the hard work and now we must finish it off.”

Dark Blues coach Graham Charlesworth said no-one deserved it more than his skipper.

He said: “It was a really special day for him and an amazing once-in-a-lifetime experience to see someone make 300.

“Sam practises throughout the year on his batting and bowling and works harder than any other batsman.

“It was nice to see his dedication rewarded.”
