Chinnor's Alex Cook won a gold and two bronze medals at the Oxfordshire Badminton Association’s national open tournament at Abingdon White Horse Leisure and Tennis Centre.

Fellow Oxfordshire player, Rubie Gray, from Witney, also went home with a bronze.

Cook teamed up with Berkshire’s Abigail Holden to strike gold by beating Steven Stallwood (Buckinghamshire) and Lucy Dong (Berkshire) 28-26 in a nail-biting final.

They saw off the challenge of Oxfordshire pair Ben Roberts, from Brize Norton, and Louise Atkins (Drayton) 21-18 in a hard-fought quarter-final.

They then defeated Gray and Torjussen in the semi-finals.

Cook also won bronze in the boys’ singles after bowing out to England international Johnnie Torjussen. He had reached the last four with a notable 21-18 quarter-final victory against No 3 seed Luke Bailey of Kent.

He then combined with Will Saunders of Surrey, to take bronze in the boys doubles, after losing to Avi Gupta and Steven Stallwood of Buckinghamshire in the semi-finals.
