Cumnor captain Sam Jones was keeping his feet firmly on the ground this week after inflicting a first home Village Cup on Shipton-under-Wychwood in 16 years.

Shipton exited the Yorkshire Tea-sponsored competition at the first round stage after a 76-run Jones’s men.

The last home defeat two- time national winners and four-time finalists Shipton experienced was to Tiddington in the 1996 Oxfordshire Group final.

Having gained such a scalp, could Cumnor go on a run in the competition?

Jones said: “I don’t want to get too carried away. We have got Cropredy next, who we would hope to beat.

“But then we would play either Horspath or Oxford Downs.

“We can’t think too far ahead.”

Cumnor were inserted and looked in trouble at 47-6, but No 8 Carl Thompson blasted 85 not out from 61 balls to steer them to a competitive 178-9.

Shipton’s reply never got going, with skipper Simon Hole falling to a spectacular catch from Tony Munsey.

Tim Senior top-scored for Shipton with 18, but wickets kept falling and they were all out for 102 with more than 11 overs remaining.

Pierre Du Plessis led the way with 4-22 and claimed the final wicket of Ryan Newhook.

Captain Jones (2-29) and Jamie Douglas (2-19) also made good contibutions with the ball.

Meanwhile, Great & Little Tew hammered hosts Sutton Courtenay by an incredible 300 runs for the 17th highest winning margin in the competition’s history.

Harry Smith top-scored with 148 not out, which was five runs off Tew’s Village Cup record, as his side cruised to 337-3.

Sutton Courtenay were all out for 37 in reply, with Liam Manley taking 6-3.

Cropredy saw off the challenge of Oxford & Bletchingdon Nondescripts.

Challow & Childrey rece-ived a walkover from Deddington, as did Kingston Bagpuize from Kidmore End.

Tiddington defeated Sandford St Martin by nine wickets.

Matt Maule took 4-26 as Sandford were all out for 130, Ian Reynolds making 30 not out.

Will Cooper (49no) led the way as Tiddington cruised to 131-1 in 28 overs.
