Former Oxfordshire paceman Jack Brooks is targeting a Test call-up after impressing for England Lions against the West Indies.

The 27-year-old Northants seamer took six wickets in the Lions’ victory at Northampton, which was his first England appearance on home soil.

Having seen Jonny Bairstow progress to the full side for the first Test against the West Indies, which starts today, Brooks is out to follow suit.

He said: “It’s very difficult to get into England’s Test side, probably more so for a fast bowler than a batsman.

“A chance may well come, with England playing with three seam bowlers and potentially a few injuries during the heavy international schedule.

“But if you put the performances in, your name is in the hat for when somebody gets injured or is dropped.”

Brooks, from Tiddington, received good reviews for his display against the West Ind-ies, after opening the bowling in each innings, taking 3-23 and 3-46.

He said: “The England selectors said I bowled very well and stood out from the guys that bowled, who all did well.

“It’s a case of not trying too hard and worrying about it.”

Brooks, who played village cricket for Tiddington and then moved to Oxford before joining Northants in 2009.

He said: “I’ve just got to carry on taking wickets for Northants and try to catch the eye of the selectors.

“I’d hope my name would be in the frame.”
