JAKE Wright was proud of Oxford United’s defensive effort as they kept npower League Two’s sharpest attack quiet, writes DAVID PRITCHARD.

Gillingham had scored 73 goals in the league this season, but although their starting line-up contained four strikers they struggled to create chances in Saturday’s goalless draw.

Wright felt the credit should go to good work from United, rather than the visitors having an off-day up front.

He said: “They tried, but I think we defended really well.

“Gillingham really went for it and played four strikers, which is very brave knowing that we’re an attacking team.

“We made a few good tackles, Liam Davis in particular, but we limited their chances and dominated the game.”

The skipper was disappointed not to take all three points, as the hosts were kept out by a fine defensive display from the Gills.

He said: “It seems to happen every week where goalkeepers are man of the match and centre halves play brilliantly.

“We’ve got to keep going, it can’t keep happening all the time.

“It’s a bit frustrating because I think we had the chances to win the game and Browny’s (Wayne Brown) had just one real save to make.

“But with the results elsewhere the table’s no different so it’s still in our hands.”
