The incentive of a bottle of bubbly could not inspire Abingdon United’s players to break their goalless drought in Evo-Stik Southern League Division 1 South & West.

And now boss Richie Bourne is looking at upping the reward for ending their goalless run – which stands at 12 hours and four minutes – ahead of the trip to Stourport where a win would confirm their escape from relegation and send the hosts down.

Bourne said: “The chairman (John Blackmore) put a bottle of Cava in the dressing room before the game for the next player to score.

“It may bring a smile to the face, but we are desperate for a goal.

“I’ll be having a chat with the chairman (John Blackmore) to see whether he can put up another incentive to urge them on.”

Striker Leon Bird , who hit the bar after coming on as substitute in the 2-0 defeat by Yate last weekend, is likely to start.

“I am hoping he will be okay for Saturday,” said Bourne.

Abingdon will be without Michael Buck, who is out for the season after a car crash.

Buck, who was giving skipper Ricky Allaway a lift, suffered neck and back injuries.

Allaway came off better and will ba available at Stourport.

North Leigh boss Mark Gee says his side must win five of their last seven games to have a chance of reaching the Division 1 South & West play-offs.

They are eight points behind fifth-placed Gosport Borough.

“We played well against Bideford and Paulton and got nothing. But the game against Didcot was as bad as we have played all season,” said Gee.

“We have to win five of the last seven to have a chance.”

Didcot Town manager Dave Mudge has praised the impact of coach Gary Elkins as they look to keep up their good run at home to Tiverton.

Last week they beat Paulton 1-0, delighting Mudge.

“That was probably the best we have played since I came here,” he said.

“At 1-0, Paulton threw everything at us, but we held on.

“And a lot of that resilience is down to Gary. He’s got that bit of experience.”
