Abingdon Utd 0

Yate Tn 2

(Stone pen 58, Purnell 75)

Abingdon United’s long wait for a first win in 2012 – and even a goal which now sees their barren run stretching to 12 hours and four minutes – goes on despite playing against ten men for an hour.

United have now gone 14 games without a victory, and how thankful they must be that Evo-Stik Southern League Division 1 South & West's bottom club Stourport Swifts are 13 points adrift at the foot of the table in the only relegation place.

Indeed if Abingdon draw at Stourport next Saturday it will send Swifts down – and ensure their own safety.

Sam Collier had a good effort turned away by Yate keeper Josh Dempsey, before Dave Stone raced through the home defence, but with Adie Adams waiting for a pass for an easy tap in, he elected to shoot and James Foster saved with his legs.

Yate were reduced to ten men after 27 minutes when Ollie Price brought Collier down, and as the United striker lay on the ground, he used his studs against his face, and was sent off.

Foster scooped a shot away from Jake Cox, before Curtis Angell fired Abingdon’s best chance of the half wide.

Foster denied Stone again, but the Yate striker put his side ahead from the penalty spot in the 58th minute after Adams went down, despite Abingdon appeals that there had been no contact.

Abingdon’s fate was sealed when a poor clearance allowed Harley Purnell to blast home from 20 yards after 75 minutes.

Substitute Leon Bird almost broke the home side’s duck, but Dempsey tipped his effort onto the woodwork.
