CRISTIAN Montano may not yet know all his new Oxford United teammates’ names, but the West Ham youngster saw enough on Saturday to be pleased with signing on loan.

The 20-year-old only joined on an initial month-long deal on Friday and will not take part in a full training session until today.

He made his debut with a 20-minute cameo from the bench in United’s 2-1 win against Rotherham United on Saturday.

Communication with players he had only met for the first time 24 hours earlier was not ideal, but the Colombian-born forward insisted it was not a problem.

He said: “It’s still a bit complicated, but I’ll get used to it and learn all of the names soon.

“On the pitch you have a football brain so they will just see you and tell you want the ball.

“I wasn’t calling their names, just shouting so they could give me the ball.

“Hopefully this week I’ll be more involved in training and will be able to work myself into the starting XI.”

Montano is quickly getting used to adapting to new surroundings.

This season he has twice been on loan at Notts County, either side of stays at Swindon and Dagenham scoring eight goals.

The new arrival was looking to maintain a run of scoring on his league debut for all three clubs.

Despite drawing a blank last weekend, Montano is optimistic of contributing to United’s promotion push.

“Every new player wants to start off with three points,” he said.

“You could say it’s a great start, apart from not scoring myself, but that will come soon.

“I’m just happy to be here and hopefully I can get my target for the season, which is getting into double-figures.

“I’m here for a month and see how things go. I’ve just got to get my head down, work hard and see what everyone else thinks.”
